Guido Hillo, Technical Draftsman/planner – A. de Jong Installatietechniek Noordwest

This is my fifth year working at A. de Jong installatietechniek Noordwest, four of these years have been internship based. During this internship I was working two days a week. I started in the field division of the service & maintenance department. After 1,5 years I made the transition to the office to learn the role of Technical draftsman/planner.  After graduating from the MTS middenkader Engineer Installatietechniek course I became a fully-fledged Technical draftsman/planner at A. de Jong.

During my internship I noticed that this organization is a very tight knit group of people where development and innovation are paramount. The Amsterdam department consists of a small, close team which makes for easy communication and a positive working environment. This is the reason I choose for A. de Jong Installatietechniek.

Jan Oosterhof, Assistant project leader – A. de Jong Installatietechniek Noordwest

This is my second year in service of A. de Jong Installatietechniek Amsterdam. The first year I was seconded through a temporary employment agency and the second year I received a year based contract, which has now been transposed in to a contract for undetermined time.

I fulfil the role of assistant project leader at the support & maintenance department. When looking for a new employer I stumbled upon A. de Jong Installatietechniek. After several job offers I decided to follow my feelings and choose A. de Jong Installatietechniek. The very pleasant job interview and the general speed of the job application process were factors that really made the difference for me. After enquiring about A. de Jong through some old colleagues that are currently employed here this positive feeling got enhanced even further.

In Amsterdam we work with a relatively small team: we know each other through and through, work together well and help each other out when possible. The future prospects for the Amsterdam office are bright and it’s nice to make a positive contribution to this project.

When I’m not working I like to play sports. Ice skating is my main focus; I participate in matches, give ice skating lessons and instruct people about the sport. Next to all of this I like to ski, cycle, mountain bike and run. Riding the Theo de Rooij classic has become a tradition for me so it was a pleasant surprise to find out A. de Jong always participates in this event with a big team.

Ton Strijk, Maintenance and Service Engineer – Joost Naaktgeboren

”After completing my training MTS Electrical Engineering in 2003 I got a job at Joost Naaktgeboren on the Measurement and Control department. Together with two other colleagues we represented this department. After some time, I started the training Assistant Engineer and the follow-up study Engineer, so I could work in the assembly process of the company.

Because of my electrical background, the management of Joost Naaktgeboren asked me if I would deepen me in STEK (the certification for Air conditioning Mechanics). I did, and after this certification I started working as Heating and Air conditioning Mechanic.

Currently I work as Maintenance and Service Engineer and I am developing myself further into Service Technician. Because of my background and the career opportunities I had I am widely employable. This keeps my work varied and challenging.”

Marian van Oostende, Salary administrator – A. de Jong Group

”My career at A. de Jong BV started accidentally. Through a friend, I heard that someone was being sought for administrative work. My education (Teacher) did not joined the job, but I applied and was accepted first by the agency and later permanent.

After various administrative work performed, I ended up on Human Resources. Here I gradually learned what to do with HRM and payroll. In practice, and through courses. When I started the company was smaller than now and the HRM work was less exacting so it could be done by one person. But with the growth of the company the need for a true HRM department became bigger. Now we are with three persons and the tasks are divided. Therefore, the HRM department has become more professional and we can support managers and employees much better.

Currently I am almost 30 years in service. During these years a lot has changed, not only in the way of working (from pen and paper to PC and e-mail) but also in the manners, the composition of the staff and of course the size of the company. What has remained is the interconnectedness which exists at A. de Jong, the willingness to help and support one another, involvement with the company, its long-term employment, short lines, the open door culture, in short, the family feeling. In addition, you will find many possibilities to develop yourself and to grow in your job. Something is done with the wishes of the employees in career field but also in terms of work and personal tasks.

All that makes it a pleasure to work here.”

Robin Timmerman, Foreman Skid Piping – De Jong Combustion

”Seven years ago I started at A. de Jong Installatietechniek through a employment agency. In 2012 I got the change to start as Pipe Fitter in te workshop of A. de Jong Group. Because De Jong is a fun and social company where I am always working with great pleasure in a fun group, I took this opportunity with both hands. In these last three years I have learned a lot on the QC department & Engineering.

My ambition to grow fits happily within the possibilities at A. de Jong Group, which has led to my new job as Foreman at the Skid Piping. I hope to grow further and that we achieve a lot of success with this company.”

Gerben van Ulden, Process Engineer – De Jong Combustion

”At the end of 2013 I started working at De Jong Combustion as a Process Engineer. Since then, I have learned a lot about incineration, large technical systems and the way our customers make their decisions around the world. The A. de Jong Group expects that you have all the knowledge, but also gives you the space to provide it. Colleagues are open for you and there is a horizontal structure where discussions are always possible.

Not only personal development but also development of the organization is clearly seen as a goal. Development of new technologies with partners such as universities, are herein leading projects. Meanwhile, I also supervise a graduation project, which is an interesting addition to my work.”

Rein Doctor, trainee during 2nd and 3rd year of study Mechanical Engineering – Albeda College Schiedam

“During my study Mechanical Engineering, I did my 2nd and 3rd year internship at the De Jong Combustion and at the engineering plant of De Jong. First I did a study on how much time was spent on each part of the engineering process, using drawings, designs and time registration. During my second internship I researched the efficiency of work processes in the factory. In order to get a good picture of these processes, I actually worked in the factory. Eventually, I wrote a report to create more efficiency.

I was guided well during my internship. If needed, engineers were at my side to give good explanation. Important as well: I was taken seriously. Discussing the implementation of my assignment with the supervisor was never a problem. As a trainee it’s nice to be given freedom. To be able to do research in a way that suits me, with enough opportunities to discuss whether I was on the right track. Both of my internships at De Jong were pleasant experiences for me.”

Sophia van der Vliet, trainee during 3rd year of the bachelor’s programme Mechanical Engineering – De Haagse Hoogeschool

“My first internship was not even over yet when I started the next one at Research & Development. I could follow up on a project a former trainee started: the development of a simple tool that can calculate and display the temperatures of the fuel and the walls of a burner. A tool like this provides more insight into these temperatures and is easier to use than time-consuming simulations. Through adjustments I had to assure that the results of the tool approach reality.

During my internship I got supervised very well. We scheduled weekly meetings to discuss my progress and deal with my questions. My internship was challenging (the assignment itself) and pleasant (in terms of coaching).”

Marc Romein, trainee during 3rd year of bachelor’s programme Mechanical Engineering – Hogeschool Rotterdam

“As a student Mechanical Engineering at Hogeschool Rotterdam, I did a preliminary internship at A. de Jong Group Schiedam. I worked on different projects for five months at the Installation Department.

At school we learn very little about mechanical engineering, so really I started this internship with zero experience. With guidance by René van Deuzen and Huda Tosun I gained a lot of knowledge in a short period of time. Not only in this field of technology, but in doing business in general.

There was not a day where I did not want to be at De Jong. There was not a day that the atmosphere at the workplace was negative. From day one I felt that I belonged here. There was plenty of work for me to do and I felt appreciated. If I had a problem, there were people there to help me.

I want to thank everyone for a great time and a great experience. In my opinion A. de Jong deserves to be an official training company.”

Patrick Klein, trainee during 3rd year of bachelor’s programme Business IT & Management – De Haagse Hogeschool

“For my higher professional study Business IT & Management I did my 3rd year internship at the A. de Jong Group. I automated the process of data collection from the ERP system. I also started up a pilot of the software package QlikView. Four dashboards that visually display processes and financial data were created within QlikView.

To me this project was challenging and instructive. I’m so glad I got the opportunity and confidence to implement the new software within the organization. My supervisor was a big help; he answered my questions extensively and showed a lot of interest in my project.

My workplace was at the Administration Department of the A. de Jong Group in Schiedam. Colleagues were always open for questions and the atmosphere in the department was great. What I also liked: I was treated as an employee!

I look back on a fun, educational and challenging internship. I met many new people. Do you want to develop yourself professionally and personally? Be sure to look into an internship at De Jong!”
